Lions vs. Colts Practice Observations

Description: The Detroit Lions are in Indiana against the Indianapolis Colts for joint practice. Observations can be seen from all three phases of the game from the offense, defense, and special teams. How well did Jared Goff perform against a top defense in the Colts? Did Jeffrey Okudah perform well against Matt Ryan and his weapons? This article gives you the latest news from the Lions training camp.

The offense struggled initially against the Colts’ defense. Jared Goff got more comfortable and the Lions used misdirection plays to get Amon-Ra St. Brown open in the flats. St. Brown did what St. Brown does and got open, dominated the secondary, and abused the defense. DJ Chark has a really good play catching a dime by Jared Goff resulting in a first down. The Lions scored a touchdown as the offense continues to shine in training camp.

The Lions’ defensive line dominated the Colts’ offensive line. Aidan Hutchinson and Alim McNeill stood out by pushing the line back and manhandling one of the best lines in football. Lions rookie safety Kerby Joseph made Nick Foles pay by jumping the route and getting an interception. Kerby Joseph was drafted by the Lions due to his ability to pick off QBs.

The Lions’ secondary played horribly. Amani Oruwariye and Jeffrey Okudah could not match what Matt Ryan and Michael Pittman Jr. were bringing. On a consistent basis, Pittman won every snap beating both of the Lions’ corners. Jeffrey Okudah got burnt on a 45-yard pass from Ryan to Pitman. Okudah got beat on multiple slant passes and looked completely lost on defense. This is very concerning and Aaron Glenn needs to make some changes.

Overall, it is exactly what we have seen throughout training camp. The lions’ offense shines, but Lions’ defense struggles. Lions’ coaches have a lot of work to do and clean up.
